The best laid plans...
I heard the former British cabinet minister Clare Short speak at the Frontline Club last night. Besides her impression that "Tony has read very little history and doesn' t do detail", she thinks that the Americans in Iraq are now in deep trouble. Tending to support her contention comes the publication yesterday of previously classified slides used by US Central Command to brief President Bush in 2002. The slides show the United States military command expected that they would have no more than 5,000 troops in the country by now. As the BBC observes, there are 132,000 US servicemen in Iraq at present.
